NED Appointments

NED appointments are a valuable source of both developing and demonstrating Boardroom competencies.

It is critical that the choice of NED role is right for the reputation of the Director, their executive role and employer brand. We understand and value corporate and personal reputations and the importance of maintaining and enhancing corporate and personal brand values.

Securing a first NED appointment is demanding and time-consuming. It is critical to choose a good NED role for your first appointment but there are many more high calibre potential NED’s than there are roles available. We provide focus and insight, along with practical tools, workshops and one-to-one support, to ensure your time is used productively and to ensure this is a positive rather than a negative experience.

Credentials

We have experience both on Boards as NED's/Chairs and in the appointment and selection process for these roles across all sectors including quoted companies, private companies, government, public appointments and charities.

We understand the balance between the skills you bring to the board, the “known and trusted” factor and the external optics of an appointment.

Our Process

We start by defining your Personal Brand, your skills, your passions and your values. This will include a review and summary analysis of Boardroom competencies and evidence, Board committees for membership or Chair, Risk appetite and sector analysis, potential conflicts, time available and geographies.

Once we have defined the target roles and organisations you are most interested in, we support you to a successful conclusion.

This support includes building a NED focused CV, Networking and contacts identifying thought leadership opportunities, preparing for interviews and application processes, due diligence on the organisation, people and culture, guidance on effective induction programmes, guidance through first board meetings and committees.

Timings

This process does take time as NED recruitment timescales are usually longer processes than executive appointments. There are often more people to meet and a more consensual approach to the decision and appointment.

It is important to be realistic about the time commitment, both in finding the right NED role and then fulfilling your new role. Experience has shown it is wise to anticipate more than the stated time commitment and an intensive first 3-6 months for an effective induction.

We recommend a 12 month engagement of support and an average of 6 months to secure an appointment.

Support will be provided through a mix of workshops, one-to-one sessions, calls and selective introductions. We are highly responsive and will agree what works best for each individual and aim for early communication to use time effectively.
